1 Research: You need to have a greater vision of where you are going, and what subject you will build your business on.
It is not necessary to have your own product initially. You can promote other people's products from your website, and earn affiliate commissions to make a good start. Many internet marketers make a killing online, simply by following the affiliate marketing model.
The fact is that your entire website must be built around a profitable niche, and this is the crucial first decision.
2 Hosting and Website: You definitely need your own website that resides on a web hosting account that you can control. It is of no use using any of the free services, such as WordPress.com or Blogger.com.
I personally host my websites at Hostgator and Westhost. These guys are miles ahead of most of the pack when it comes to critical elements such as 24/7/365 live support, page load speed and minimal downtime.
I also build all of my websites exclusively on the self-hosted version of WordPress.org.
3 Content Creation: It is important that you create unique content for your website. All websites start out somewhere, and it goes without saying that creating content takes time.
If writing is an obstacle for you, which it is for many people, take it easy. For this reason it is important that you create your online business around a subject that you are passionate about. You don't need to know everything about it, but it must excite you to want to learn more and do research on it.
And when it comes to start punching the keys with a blank screen staring at you, practice makes perfect, and you will soon write without even thinking too much about it.

4 Traffic Generation: This is what many website owners consider the hardest part, after the different aspects of content creation.
But, if you start slow, focus on one thing at a time and do it right, you will build up momentum to have your website flooded with prospective buyers before you know it. The big 3 traffic generation strategies (in my books) are Search Engine Optimization, Social Media, Article Marketing and Viral Tactics.
5 List Building: The modern internet is all about relationships. In order to build that with your visitors, to win their trust, and to create the potential for having repeat customers, you need to capture their contact details.
For this you will need an auto-responder system, with which you can send out a series of automated emails, broadcasts, newsletters and promotions after their sign-up. For this I use Aweber and I highly recommend them.
